Bremen - Böttcherstraße

The Böttcherstraße is an old narrow street in the historic center of Bremen where many craftsmen established their factories in the Middle Ages. Nowadays, this tradition continues, so that you can find their many cute Arts and Crafts Shops. But it is also famous for its outstanding medivial architectur, e.g. the Robinson Crusoe House, the House of the 7 Lazy Brothers or the House of the Glockenspiel.

Abuse of Alcohol - Binge Drinking

During our course studies we worked out different presentations on the topic abuse of alcohol. E.g. we thought of places where the so-called binge-drinking (excessive drinking) takes place, researched statistics and damages caused by alcohol. This is what we we found out about the topic and presented during the meeting in Bremen:

Meeting points to drink in Bremen
First we tell you something about the “Discomeile”. The “Discomeile” is a street near the main station, where you can find many different discos and bars. Examples for discos are “Stubu” and “La Viva”, they promote themselves with free entrance up to 11 pm. At “1€ Bar” you can get every alcoholic drink for one euro.
Each disco has their own discopromotion´, for example “Tequila Party”,where you can drink the whole night tequila for one euro. Another one is “It’s your birthday”, it means, if you come with eight friends you all get free entrance and a bottle of vodka for free.
Furthermore in Bremen there are also special events where many people drink a lot of alcohol:
At the “Freimarkt” (big fairground happening once a year and lasting for 2 weeks) is a “Bayernzelt” where many people sit in and drink liters of beer.
The carnival parade is another one. There you go with different wagons through the city and also drink a lot of alcohol.
During the World- and European championship many people met at the “Domshof” in the city centre of Bremen to watch the match and enjoy the great atmosphere. There public viewing of important Werder Bremen matches (e.g. German cup final) takes place too.
A Northern German tradition is the “Kohlfahrt”. The adults go with a little wagon, play games and drink quickies, in the end they go eating.
Last but not least many youth celebrate house parties, these are meetings just to drink, where everybody brings some alcohol with them. Often they play drinking games, mostly with cards and cubes.

Statistics of Binge Drinking
Our topic was statistics of alcohol abuse. The first statistic of our presentation was “binge drinking among students of university of Stuttgart”. There is information about the students and their behaviour regarding alcohol cosumption given.
The interviewed students are undergraduate women and men, so we can say that men drink more often than women.
On the one hand most men say they drink excessively 1 or 2 times in a week. On the other hand many women say they never drink alcohol.
The second statistic was “beer cosumption in Germany” and the interviewees were over 14 years.
It shows that most people said that they never drink beer but it can also be seen that more than a quarter of the interviewees consumed beer either every day or several times a week.
Our last table was “patients at hospital with alcohol poisoning 2000-2006”. It shows that the number of patients at hospital has constantly been rising.
During our work with this topic, we also came across the consequential damages. They are for example that your liver and your brain gets severe damages. Your body suffers from underfeeding and is toxicated. At that stage when you don’t give your body alcohol you are subject to detox syndrome.

Finally you had the chance to see a movie made by Dennis and Stefan capturing the topic of alcohol abuse and an alternative to it. This is the result:

Leisure activities / Esteban Martín Álvarez

What do you do in your free time? Why?

Sometimes, people have a lot of free time because they have nothing to do. They haven’t got exams or they have already finished their work, so they get bored. When this happens to me, I feel like doing some activities I enjoy, such as cooking, playing the bagpipes or riding my bike. I’m going to tell you about some of my hobbies in my free time and maybe you like these activities too. If this happens, you can do them with me. I wait you!

Cooking

This is one of my favourite hobbies and I practise it on Fridays and at the weekend. I like cooking Italian food, like fresh pasta and pizzas, but I also make other not so good and delicious recipes (once I made a lot of disgusting mushrooms croquettes which looked like a pile of concrete with crunchy rocks). Some Saturdays I make chocolate for breakfast, and it takes me half an hour or more, if I want that it tastes soft and thick. Some Fridays and Saturdays I make fresh pasta with Bolognese sauce.

Making the dough takes me an hour, and I have to use flour, three or four eggs (depending on the people who are going to eat at home), olive oil and salt.

After making the dough I have to flatten, cut it with a special machine and boil it. This takes me half an hour.

But I also have to make the sauce. This is the longest task, and it lasts about three hours. I use onion, natural tomato sauce, red pepper, carrots, white wine, a little salt and a small piece of Parmigiano-Regiano cheese. After eating it all, there are two activities I like, which are suitable to help digestion.

Swimming and cycling

When the weather is hot I like swimming in the sports centre. I usually go there when I haven’t got much homework, and it’s a relaxing activity, because the water is warm. But if you go while the children are in their swimming class, swimming turns into an impossible and stressful activity.

With cycling there isn’t this problem because the cycle lane is wide and it’s about 25 km long. I have cycled it many times. I go from O Couto, where I live, to Outariz, and then, from Outariz to Untes. From Untes, I go to Velle, passing Outariz and A Chavasqueira. I finish the cycle track passing A Lonia, and I come back home.

Sometimes while I am cycling along the cycle track, I throw some bangers and fireworks. I have got a lot of them. These are some of them:

Playing music

Posted by Picasa

I also play the bagpipes in the Bagpipes School. I go there on Wednesdays, Fridays and some Mondays or Thursdays. I play the bagpipes at home with my own bagpipes. My bagpipes are green, because my aunt is a craftswoman and she wove a special cover for them. These are my bagpipes.

Sometimes in the year I go with the Real Junior Band to bagpipes championships. If you click on this link, you can see the band playing in Viana do Castelo (Portugal).

We are on first level and we play the bagpipes, the drums and other musical instruments. I started playing the bagpipes six years ago, because I had listened to bagpipes music and I loved it. I hope to be able to go on playing the bagpipes for a lot of years. I also hope to travel to new different places and show other people Galician music.

Now you know some of the activities I do in my free time. As you can see, I try to use my free time properly and I never get bored. I hope you have enjoyed reading it.

You can see me playing the bagpipe in the following video:
